Video Art Festival Miden invites all video artists and video creators to participate in this year’s events, which will take place, like the past years, in public spaces at the Historic Centre of the city of Kalamata, Greece, in July 2012.

Festival Miden presents “This is War” at MADATAC, Madrid



Festival Miden has been invited to present the screening program "This is War" at MADATAC festival, which will take place in Madrid, Spain, on December 12 to 18, 2011.

The program, which was initially presented at the last edition of Festival Miden last July in Kalamata, GR, will be presented slightly altered, without the participation of Wei-Ming Ho, because "Self-destruction for eternity" has been selected for the Competitive International Section of MADATAC. So, our best wishes and good luck to Wei-Ming Ho!

Festival Miden presents “Charge a Soul” at Espacio Enter, TEA, Canarias



Festival Miden has been invited to present "Charge A soul" at Espacio Enter 2011 (17-20 November) at TEA (Tenerife Espacio de las Artes). The program is curated by Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos and Gioula Papadopoulou and introduces 14 animation works from 10 countries and was first presented in Festival Miden 2011 in Kalamata, GR.

Festival Miden screenings in Chios



Festival Miden has been invited to present 4 screening programs from the last edition of the festival as presented in July 2011 in Kalamata, in Chios, a beautiful Greek island of Eastern Aegean Sea.

The programs that have been selected are: Charge a Soul, LOL, Feeling Lucky and A last Instruction to the Grass.

They will be presented on Saturday 5/11 (Charge A soul, LOL) and Sunday 6/11 (Feeling Lucky, A Last Instruction to the Grass), 7-9 p.m. at Kalliopi Artspace in co-operation with Chios Photography Club, with free entrance for the public.

MONOBALANCE, a selection of Festival Miden on Visualcontainer TV



Festival Miden has been invited to present a program on international web TV “Visualcontainer TV”. Visualcontainer TV is a web project of the Italian videoart distributor Visual Container, dedicated to the most interesting international videoart projects and festivals. The channel is welcoming solo and group exhibitions and festivals under the care of curators from all over the world only on invite.

From October 6 to November 2, Festival Miden and Visualcontainer TV present “Monobalance”. The screening program was initially presented in Festival Miden 2011, last July in Kalamata, Greece.

Festival Miden screenings in Kardamili, Mani



Festival Miden presents the screening programs «LOL» and “Monobalance” at the photographic exhibition “Planet Bicycle”. The screening programs, curated by Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos and Gioula Papadopoulou, were previously presented in Festival Miden 2011 earlier in July in Kalamata.

«LOL», which will be screened on July 29 (in continuous loop), is about 54 min duration and includes videos from 16 artists and groups:
Nenko Genov, Jeroen Nelemans, Jose Salas, Boe-lin Bastian, Stefan Adamski, Chiara Balsamo, Yuliya Lanina, Eva Olsson, Christin Bolewski, Jenn Berger, Rudolf Costin, Joacélio Batista, Timo Wright, GRUPPO SINESTETICO, Wolf D. Schreiber και MOBTIK.

“Monobalance”, which will be screened on July 30 (in continuous loop), is also 54 min duration and includes videos from 11 artists:

Video Art: A survival guide



More dynamic than ever Festival Miden is ready again to present an intriguing selection from the global production of video art by young and aspiring artists. A production that the festival follows systematically 7 years now, giving its audience the opportunity to obtain a holistic view of an art form that is evolving unexpectedly, rapidly and diversely at this very moment.

Kalamata's video art festival, that this year reached more than 1000 submissions from all around the globe, promises a 3 day fest of worldwide contemporary video creation while at the same time suggesting a unique survival guide to extreme overflow of images we face today.

Festival Miden 2011 will take place 7-9 of July at the picturesque neighbourhood of the Historic Centre of Kalamata, Amfias square, with free entrance for the public, combining with its unique way the popular Greek summer open cinema with contemporary art.

In its 3 day events, Festival Miden will present 189 selected videos from 45 countries. They represent the most sharp and interesting thoughts, aesthetic explorations, experimentations and questionings, as well as expressive forms and trends that are “happening now” in the most uneasy minds worldwide, transcending boundaries or restrictions.

The screenings include the themed video art programs “LOL”, “THIS IS WAR”, “TRAUMA”, “HYPERFORM”, “MONOBALANCE”, “A LAST INSTRUCTION TO THE GRASS”, “CHARGE A SOUL”, “DARK FORWARD”, “FEELING LUCKY” and “LOCAL CALLING”. Also, this year Festival Miden will present tributes to some very interesting foreign festivals, art groups and curators such as Oslo Screen Festival (Norway), All Art Now (Syria), Cyberbrothers (Russia), Videoplay (Argentina) and CologneOFF (Germany).

Furthermore, several interesting parallel events are scheduled, including a special screening of the themed program “Come to Life” at the Archaeological Museum of Messenia, an introductive lecture about Video Art History by Gioula Papadopoulou at the Municipal Conservatory of Kalamata, while the closing event of the Festival will be the special audiovisual party set “The New Style”, in which DJ Blue Lagoon from the well-known Greek art group Kormoranos mixes on stage music and videos that he and his partner Haris Lagousis have edited.

Festival Miden 2011 is curated by Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos and Gioula Papadopoulou while Margarita Stavraki curates "Hyperform" and the parallel event "Come to Life", and Maria Bourika curates "Trauma".

Festival Miden screenings at VAU Fest, Ukraine



Festival Miden has been invited to present “Upstream Eyeglasses” (a theme program curated by Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos, first presented in Festival Miden 2010) at the International Short Film and Video Art Festival “VAU Fest”, at Ukrainka, Ukraine.

“VAU Fest” is realised in Ukrainka for the 2nd time. This year the Festival will take place on the 21 – 22 of May. The motto of the "VAU-2011" is “In Search of Goldfish”, and it is dedicated to the pioneers of avant-garde art and cinematography – Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Rene Clair and Louis Bunuel, with a special focus on their first experimental films. The Festival strives to attract the attention of a broad audience to the masterpieces of world experimental cinema.

Festival Miden in Szczecin, Poland with “CologneOFF 2011: Baltic Sea”


CologneOFF 2011: Baltic Sea is a cycle of screening events around the Baltic Sea, organised and curated by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne, director of the nomadic festival CologneOFF in collaboration with various institutes in each country. In this frame, Festival Miden presents on May 14 at CologneoFF 2011 Szczecin a screening program entitled “Less-Time-Less”, curated by Gioula Papadopoulou & Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos.

“Less-Time-Less” is a selection of videos from Video Art Festival Miden, Kalamata, Greece. It presents 15 videos by 15 contemporary artists from Greece, Italy, Germany, Israel, Slovakia, Belgium, Norway, France, Slovenia and Canada. All videos deal with the perception of time and the fluidity of this perception. They approach various aspects of life and human experience,
capturing time, alternating and transforming time, stretching time, bending time, blending time, visualizing memories, histories, thoughts and desires. Creating “time choreographies”, the works included in this unit lead us into a poetic universe of parallel time flows, in a “time-less” or “less-timeless”
video journey.

Festival Μηδέν at OpenShowStudio, Athens



OpenShowStudio invites and presents Video Art Festival Miden. The themed programs of contemporary video art "All Greek to Me", "The Moneying of Life" and "Supernatural" will be presented on 6, 7 and 8 May 2011.

Festival Miden screenings in Art Walks 2011, Kalamata



Festival Miden participates in Art Walks 2011, a major open exhibition organized by Cultural Anti-logos, under the aegis of FARIS (Cultural Organization of the Municipality of Kalamata) in the centre of Kalamata from April 11 to May 8 featuring artworks in shop windows all over the city centre. This is the second realization of Art Works in Kalamata.
                                   
In this frame, Festival Miden presents a special selection of videos by Greek artists, curated by Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos and Gioula Papadopoulou.

Also a public screening of “Land/e/scape” (a theme program first presented in Festival Miden 2010) curated by architects Mariaggela Koutiva and Olga Brouma will take place at Amfias square, Historic Centre of Kalamata, on Monday, 2 May, at 9.30 pm.

Festival Miden in Ukraine with CologneOFF 2011



Cologne OFF 2011-UKRAINE is taking place between 14 and 20 March 2011 in Kiev & Kharkiv (or Kharkov).

The event is curated by Wilfried Agricola de Cologne, director of the nomadic festival CologneOFF and is a collaboration of “CologneOFF 2011 - videoart in a global context” with the Goethe Institut Ukraine Kiev, the Center for Contemporary Art Foundation Kiev, Media Lab Kiev, Kharkiv City Art Gallery, Nuremberg House Kharkiv and Kharkiv National University.

Festival Μiden at ProjectOrooM, London



Festival Miden co-operates with ProjectoRooM, an indipendent artists collective who organize special exhibitions and screenings in their space in London. On Friday 12 November 2010, ProjectoRooM presented Short Night II, in collaborationh with Festival Miden. The screening included videos from the last edition of Festival Miden, selected and curated by Maria Bourika.

Video art... strikes back



Video Art Festival Miden is ready to strike again this summer inviting us on a journey to the visual universe of cotemporary global video-creation. An adventurous as much as delightful trip to the thoughts and quests of the avant-garde video-artists of the new generation who reflect the most sharp and interesting trends of contemporary art.

Festival Miden will take place at the traditional neighborhoods of Kalamata’s Historic Centre, at Amfias square, in July 8-10, 2010 (9.30 pm), with free entrance. 

In its sixth realisation, more than 800 videos were submitted from every part of the world. During the three nights of the festival a selection of 181 videos will be presented, including tributes to foreign festivals and art-groups and interactive programs and installations.

Wilfried Agricola de Cologne: an interview


Wilfried Agricola is a visual artist involved with new media and video and founder and director of some of the most known and influential international platforms for new media, such as the online mobile film festival Cologne OFF, the web platform VideoChannel (an online collection of thematical/national curatorial contributions from well-known festivals and curators around the globe) and many other networking projects.

His co-operation with Festival Miden started last year, with exchanges of screenings in the context of the mobile festival Cologne OFF.

In this year’s edition of Festival Miden, Wilfried Agricola curates 2 programs, presented on the premiere day of the festival (Thursday 8/7, Screen B): Found Footage! (a thematical screening with videos using found and archive footage) and the interactive program Flash & Thunder (a selection of artistic works created with Flash). 

In an interview to Gioula Papadopoulou, Wilfried Agricola talks about his artistic concerns, his work and his plans for the future.

Festival Miden is one of the partner festivals of NMF [NewMediaFest] 2010 which celebrates the 10 years of [NewMediaArtProjectNetwork]:\\cologne.
In the frame of  NMF 2010, NewMediaArtProjectNetwork and CologneOFF  has announced a new call under the title “Let’s celebrate!!”.
In 2010, CologneOFF is also celebrating it’s 5th anniversary and refines its new concept as a networked festival, including a networked jury, networked contributions and a series of networked screenings between September and December 2010 and beyond.
CologneOFF invites all to celebrate CologneOFF VI under the festival theme "let's celebrate - memory and identity in an experimental context" to be launched in September 2010 as part of NMF 2010.

“Dreaming of my city” presented at Kalamata Youth Center



Open presentation of the online project “Dreaming of my city” on Friday, 20 November, 18.00, at Kalamata Youth Center.

The project started last July and is an ongoing, online continuation of “Urban (R)evolutions”, a theme program screened in Festival Miden 2009.

Many artists, photographers, videomakers, architects, art-groups, schools and creative youngsters from Greece and abroad have been presented through a blog and a website in an attempt to create an interesting platform for art and culture in urban environment that will be constantly updated with new entries, information and links.

This year, the basic program of the festival includes curated theme screenings (Tranforming the ordinary, Strange Thoughts Missing Text, 17 Continents, Video Art + Dance, Urban (R)evolutions), as well as several special collaborations and tributes (Cologne OFF Video & Film Festival, VideoChannel, globalscreen.org, Ionian University) and also a special selection from videos presented in the previous editions of the festival, in a celebration of its 5years anniversary.

Dreaming of my city: an open social web action for art and culture in urban environment



The creative team of Festival Miden and Sea Level organize a series of meetings with new media artists, starting a week before Festival Miden 2009 annual screenings in Kalamata’s Historic Centre and continuing during the festival.
These meetings, which aim to introduce young artists and creative youngsters of Kalamata to the creative use of new media, will set the basis for a continuing collaboration for a future project, organized by Sea Level (the non-profit organization that organizes Festival Miden) and supported by the European Program “Youth in Action”, entitled “Dreaming of my city: an open social web action for art and culture in urban environment”. The project will extend “Urban (R)evolutions”, which begun as a collective video and images screening, to a wider communication platform for urban environment on the web.
First artists invited are Manthos Santorineos, Harikleia Hari, Tzimis Efthimiou and the group Personal Cinema. The artists will make presentations and lead a series of workshops on the creative use of video art, web 2.0 and social media for collective projects in the context of the program “Dreaming of my city”. The program will be completed in November 2009.

The admission to the workshops and the participation in the project is open and free for anyone interested.

"CologneOFF invites....!" and Festival Miden present 17 Greek video artists at Video Festival Celje/Slovenia



In the framework of "CologneOFF invites....!" screening program, CologneOFF presents in the 3rd Video Festival Celje/Slovenia “Videorats: Electric rats dream electric dreams”, 2-5 July 2009, a selection of Greek Video Art from Festival Miden.

The screening is entitled “Realities, surrealities and other crimes…” and will be presented on 2/7/2009, at 21.00.

Festival Miden presents “Music Videos” at “Art Walks”, Kalamata



Cultural Anti-logos co-operates with Festival Miden for a special video art presentation at the Historic Centre of Kalamata, in the frame of “Art Walks” exhibition.

Festival Miden will present a selection of Music Videos (previously presented at Festival Miden 2007 and 2008) on Saturday, 2/5/2009, at 21.00, in an open space between Agii Apostoli and Amfeia’s square, Historic Centre, Kalamata.

Globalscreen’s Simulations in Festival Miden 2009

Festival Miden 2009 will present the new Globalscreen project “Simulations”. “Simulations” is an artistic examination of questions of perception and of the Zeitgeist in an era of inundation by pictures and by simulations of reality. The artists in this project have been invited to develop a specific perspective in reflecting individually these technological and cultural processes, be it in a political, aesthetic or philosophical approach. The genres extend from experiment to the interactive and animation and to work in documentary mode.

“Art Walks” in Kalamata

In the frame of “Art Walks”, an open exhibition organized by Cultural Anti-logos in the centre of Kalamata from the 21st of March to the 1st of May 2009, Festival Miden presents 2 special screenings, with videoworks from 12 Messinian artists.

The exhibition is realized with the support of the Messinia Chamber of Commerce, with the participation of 80 artists and 150 artworks, which will be exhibited in shop windows all over the city centre.

The exhibition is organized and curated by: Vasiliki Kateri, Andreas Zagakos, Anna Gonatidou, Aris Koromilas and Michalis Dimitrakopoulos.

Videologies, a Festival Miden screening at the space of “Theatre Group of Tripoli”

Festival Miden presents Videologies, an introductory video art screening of Festival Miden in Tripoli, Greece, on the 8th of April 2009, at 21.00, at the Theatre Group of Tripoli auditorium.
The screening program includes 19 videos from 11 countries (Greece, Italy, Turkey, UK, USA, Russia, Netherlands, Ireland, Hungary, Croatia, and Sweden). Selected works have been previously presented in Festival Miden 2007 and 2008. The program is curated and presented by Gioula Papadopoulou (curator of Festival Miden).

20 one-minute videos will represent Greece in the World One Minutes exhibition at the Beijing Today Art Museum in 2008



The exhibition is included in the city of Beijing’s cultural programme connected with the Olympic Games 2008 and is organized by The One Minutes Foundation in Amsterdam and the Beijing Today Art Museum. The best One Minute videos from ninety countries will be projected continuously on the walls of the museum.

For the Greek selection The One Minutes Foundation collaborated with ASFA (Athens School of Fine Arts) and Manthos Santorinaios. Gioula Papadopoulou, representing Festival Miden, was also a member of the selection panel.

Festival Miden screenings at "Project Happiness 2008", Fournos

For three days, Fournos Centre for Digital Culture (Athens, Greece) redefines happiness through an art festival which is realised with the contribution of a large number of both acclaimed and young artists who present their work. "Project Happiness 2008" is on from Friday, January 18 to Sunday, January 20 .

The festival features works up to fifteen minutes each that focus on certain domains of art, such as dance, music, theatre, poetry, video and photography or make use of all of them together. The program of each day includes five shows while by the end of each evening a party is thrown.

In the context of "Project Happiness 2008", Fournos presents a selection of videos from the archive of Festival Miden in two special screenings entitled Happiness?#1 and
Happiness?#2, curated by Gioula Papadopoulou.

Festival Miden presents "Music videos" at Stage performances, Larissa, Greece

Festival Miden presents "Music videos", previously presented in Festival Miden 2007 in Kalamata, at "Stage performances", Larissa, Greece.

The videos will be screened before the scheduled music performances of "Stage" in November and December 2007 and they will also be presented in "Open Stage", a visual arts event, in February 2008.

Video Art Festival Miden collaborates with the organization Citizens for the Future for a special presentation of Festival Miden in Athens. Over 200 videos from various artists from all over the world will be presented in a 3-day screening program at Alekton artspace, from Friday 7 to Sunday 9 of December 2007. Festival Miden will present the whole screening program presented last July in Kalamata, the birth-city of the festival, giving the audience of Athens the chance to meet the work of the participant artists. This event is an attempt to promote artistic communication, establishing a “meeting point” of contemporary video art and video creation in general, as well as an “exchange” between Kalamata, a small Greek city with strong cultural tradition, and Athens, the capital of Greece.

Festival Miden, a video art festival that was born three years ago in Kalamata, has already been recognized as one of the most significant events for video art in Greece. It is realized for the last three years in open spaces of the Historic Centre of Kalamata. The next Festival Miden will be held in Kalamata in July 2008.

The presentation of Festival Miden in Athens includes the following screenings:

-The complete main program of Festival Miden 2007 (as presented in Kalamata last July)
-The theme programs “Students’ videos” and “Parallel Words” (from the parallel screenings of Festival Miden 2007)
-The screening program “Cosmetics-Styles-Attitudes” (first presented in Kalamata Municipal Gallery in World’s Museum Day, May 2007)

The audience will have the chance to see the video work of various artists, from more than 30 countries: Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Syria, UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Luxemburg, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Slovenia, Georgia, Russia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Canada, USA, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and others. The participant artists cover, through their videos, a wide range of contemporary issues, art practices and trends. The program is divided to thematic and morphological units, in order to help the audience (experienced or not) to achieve a global and complete view of contemporary video creation. The program is curated by Margarita Stavraki and Gioula Papadopoulou.

Festival Miden collaborates with Argopolis.eu Urban Vision and Sound Festival in Argos, presenting "Animation"

Inspired from Italo Calvino's novel "Invisible Cities", Argopolis.eu Urban Vision and Sound Festival, is based on the civilisation that is developing in the urban surrounding expressed through the digital technology. Argos, the oldest constantly populated city of Europe, is the city that Argopolis will take place at 31th of August and 1st of September 2007. The visitor will experience a trip at the cities that he lives in, and has never noticed: cities & memories - cities & signs - hidden cities - imaginary cities.
Music, video art, comics, small length films, animation, architecture design, photography, graphic design, fanzine magazines and other cultural magazines, painting and many others events will help the imagination to view the invisible cities we all live in.

Festival Miden will present the showcase "Animation" (on both 31th of August and 1st of September), as presented in Festival Miden 2007 in Kalamata (6/7).

Festival Miden in the exhibition “Next and Across”, Athens, Greece

Festival Miden and Gioula Papadopoulou present “Stories next door”, a video art screening program in the context of the group exhibition “Next and Across”. The exhibition takes place in an old house in Athens (10, Alamanas str, Galatsi, 11146, Athens, Greece) from 20/4 to 5/5 and focuses on the concept of “neighborhood”, as a natural and cultural place of human life, exploring relations between “community”, “neighborhood”, “home” and “ego” through painting, photography, video, installations and parallel events (video art screenings, performances, movies and concerts).

Festival Miden and Switch On artspace present:

Switch Οn art space presents, in collaboration with Video Art Festival Miden, Switch on/Switch off, a group exhibition about light.

The exhibition focuses on handling light as the basic form-making production medium of art projects that act as self-illuminating in darkness:
Photos, light sculptures, installation and video projections -a medium physically and conceptually related to light- coexist in a dark space, creating discrete “light paths”, literally and metaphorically, in an artistic discourse exploring different aspects of light in art.
