Festival Miden at "Videoforma", St.Petersburg, RU

Festival Miden has been invited to present a selection of Greek videoart works under the theme of interaction between visual & sound at Videoforma festival, St.Petersburg.

Videoforma will take place at Sergey Kuryokhin Center for Modern Art (http://www.kuryokhin.net), 5-6 of December, 2014. Miden's program, entitled "Do you hear the image moving?", curated by Gioula Papadopoulou, will be screened on December 6.

The program introduces 8 videos by 8 Greek artists from the last 2 editions of Festival Miden in Kalamata, GR. The common element of the selected works, which vary in their visual form of expression, is the interaction between image and sound. They all use original sound and music written for the specific works. Or in some cases, the motion of the image seems to produce the sounds of the video. The dark contemporary "fairytales" of Mary Zygouri and Thanassis Tsimpinis, the abstract narrations of Aris Michalopoulos and Dimitris Traperas, the performative choreographies of Sofia Simaki and Iokasti Ioannou, the pixel animation of Martha Koumarianou and the playful, yet deeply ironic social criticism of Anna Vasof, are all based equally to image and sound to strengthen their content and concept.

List of participant artists/videos:

1. Mary Zygouri, Bull Market, Greece 2012, 5.50
2. Sofia Simaki, Recall of a funeral, Greece 2005, 2.00
3. Aris Michalopoulos, No In No Cent, Greece 2013, 4.27
4. Iokasti Ioannou, 12+1, Germany 2013, 2.50
5. Dimitris Traperas, Chaos theory – Butterfly effect, Greece 2014, 1.44
6. Anna Vasof, Fanfare Toilete, Greece 2012, 2.59
7. Martha Koumarianou, Pixel in the rain, Greece 2008, 2.44
8. Thanasis Tsimpinis, DUST, Greece 2014, 7.45

Lives of "others": an open call to an action against discrimination and social exclusion

Festival Miden and Kalamata Youth Center cooperate with a group of young people in Kalamata for a special project which will be realized with the support of the European Commission (Youth in Action Programme).

The theme and the basic aim of the project is the combating of social discrimination, xenophobia, racism and social exclusion, through a variety of collective & participative actions which will combine public art practices and the creative use of new technologies to create an online platform (blog-forum) in order to begin an open dialogue with -and about- minorities and people with less opportunities.  The project will start with an open call addressed to everyone interested, but specially targeted towards immigrants and people with special needs/capacities. The main objective is to set the basis for a communication network without borders between young people of different backgrounds and needs, combining social awareness with a free cultural expression with the use of art and the contemporary tools that information society offers. One of the main intentions is also the personal development of the participants regarding the use of artistic practices & new technologies via creative, collaborative and non-formal learning methods, hoping to set a basis for future projects & collaborations.

The program will be realized in the city of Kalamata. All young civilians of Kalamata are invited to participate with works and proposals. The project will include open meetings, lectures and demonstrations of related art works, conducted by invited visual & new media artists and computing specialists. The invited artists will discuss with the young local participants and co-operate with them in the creative process. Besides the young attendants of Kalamata, any person interested in the project (from all over Greece and internationally) may also participate through the internet during the whole period of the project, submitting their proposal and relative material individually. The open call also invites through the web all interested students and young artists  globally to participate with their personal works, encouraging this way a global discussion.

The proposed duration of the project is 5 months (till mid-October 2013), but the idea is to create a permanent network that will continue to function also in the future, at least online.

Festival Miden at Espacio Enter 2012, Canarias

Festival Miden presents the screening program "How to Art" at Espacio Enter, Canarias. The Espacio Enter 2012 edition will take place 8-11 November 2012 at TEA - Tenerife Espacio de las Artes.

“How to Art” is a screening program curated by Gioula Papadopoulou and Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos, initially presented in Festival Miden 2012 last July in Kalamata, Greece.

The world of global art keeps expanding in the digital times, and thus its volume has increased beyond imagination. There are voices already speaking of a digital cacophony. At the same time, relevant questions have been multiplied too: Is this art, how do you create art, how do you confront a work of art or an artistic gesture, what is the role of a curator and how does the notorious “art market” works? Everything you need [or never wanted] to know about the magnificent world of contemporary art!

Participant artists:
Constantinos Koulakmanidis, Shahar Marcus, Neno Belchev, Oscar Salamanca, Maximilian Schmötzer & Heitzhausen Fabian, Dan Boord/Marilyn Marloff/Luis Valdovino, José Vieira, Alice Souma, Paul Wiersbinski, Andreas Goldfuss

Curated by Gioula Papadopoulou + Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos

NOMINT, Nikos Giavropoulos, Poly Kokkinia, Mary Zygouri, Gioula Papadopoulou, Theodoros Zafeiropoulos, Dimitris Tzamouranis, Andreas Savva, Giorgos Maraziotis, Bill Balaskas, Andreas Sitorengo

During its 3day events the festival will present 216 videoworks from 45 countries, selected out of more than 1500 video-entries.
